2014 Meeting of the Minds was a great success. The Power Disrupters, last year's winning team, captured first in the Science and Math, and the US History and Geography categories. The Pollard library's team of librarians took first place in the Arts and Leisure category. The high school teams gave them both a run for their money. Great job Teen Friends!

FALL 2013

Children's Shopping Day Event - Saturday, November 30th

December 2, 2013

Dear Friends,

Our second annual Children’s Shopping Day last Saturday confirmed our observation from last year’s event: children really like to shop, too! Once again, we offered over a hundred children the opportunity to shop on their own or with the help of a very caring and gentle teenage volunteer and get their gifts wrapped to take home for the holidays. After three hours of shopping exclusively set aside for kids, we tried something new by opening the rest of the afternoon to adult shoppers as well. Shopping was brisk and by the end of the event, there was nothing left!

Serenaded by the the Neverly Brother’s live acoustic guitar music, families came in from the cold to also buy raffle tickets for an iPod, snack on homemade goodies from our bake sale, and discover bargains at our book sale. In total, the Friends made over $1,600, all of which will support the Pollard Memorial Library.

Thank you all again for your generous gift donations, your time volunteering, and your constant support. You made Children’s Shopping Day as enjoyable as last year’s Day, and we hope to hear from you again next year.

Best wishes,
Amy Woo Skinner
President of the Friends

SPRING 2013:

Many many thanks to the Members, volunteers, bakers, library staff , Executive Board and supporters of all stripes who made this year's Annual Book Sale a great success! The Friends raised almost $2,600, all of which will be used to fund the museum pass program and the many events and programs we support throughout the year. This is a record for the past few years and it was wonderful to have it back at the library. It gave us a chance to meet so many patrons as they browsed and bought everything from hardbound fiction to children's books to baked goodies to a chance or two to win one of our raffle prizes. Daniel Hamilton was the lucky winner of the 50/50 raffle, and Oscar Ortega, Helen Blaschke and Donna Richards each won a basket of books. We hope everyone enjoyed the sale and look forward to seeing you at the next one. Until then remember to check out the book carts on the ground floor where the Friends always have books for sale.

WINTER 2013:

Thank you to all the volunteers, contributors, challengers, and Friends who made the 2013 Meeting of the Minds Trivia Challenge at Lowell's Winterfest a great success! In a combined effort, the Friends and the Teen Friends of the Library were able to raise over $100 from this event through registrations and the sale of delicious baked goods. This is a great number, especially considering how they had to drastically reduce the length of the event to a ONE NIGHT ONLY affair (Friday, Febraury 22, 2013) due to Winterfest's original postponement. Here are some photos from the event:

A Message from Amy Woo Skinner, President of the Friends of the Pollard Library:

November 24, 2012

To all you wonderful volunteers, donors, and supporters of the Friends of the Library: I am very pleased to tell you that this weekend we successfully launched our first Children's Shopping Day event. Approximately 70 families participated, enabling over a hundred children, ages 4 to 14 to enjoy shopping "on their own."

With the gentle and assuring help of our cadre of teenage volunteers, our young shoppers bought gifts for their loved ones, got their treasures wrapped and gift tagged from a dedicated team of wrapping assistants, and headed out the door in time to enjoy the City of Lights Parade.

Thanks to an outpouring of donations from you and the community at large, we sold over 400 items and still had loads of donations left over. (We'll be donating these items to Lowell's Washington Elementary School which will host a similar shopping event next month.)

Altogether the Friends made over a thousand dollars, an amount that has exceeded our expectations and made us look forward to transforming this experience into an annual event.

Here are a few photos of the event for you to enjoy:

Thank you all again for making the event such a memorable one.

Best wishes,

Amy Woo Skinner
President of the Friends of the Library

Bylaws and Past Meeting Minutes:

About Us:

The Friends of the Pollard Memorial Library is a volunteer group dedicated to supporting the library and its programs. Our primary goal is to support the museum pass program, allowing library patrons to visit designated museums at reduced admission prices. We also sponsor various other programs at the library, such as author programs, genealogy workshops, and movie nights.

Our funding comes from membership dues, donations, book sales, bake sales, and other events, as well as from ongoing sales from our book cart (located in the library next to the circulation desk).

We are committed to supporting the library and the Lowell community. Currently we host an annual book sale, and we plan to add more outreach and membership events in the coming year. Are you interested in a summer garden tour, a fall apple-picking party, a winter bowling night, or a spring wine tasting? Let us know your thoughts. We welcome your input and look forward to the opportunity to get to know you better.

Join us today! Annual memberships are $15 for families, $10 for individuals, and $5 for students and seniors. Your contribution will go directly toward supporting library programs.
